Your Child Has 22 Days to Walk Through a Door IIT Madras Opens Once a Year
The October 2026 cohort of IIT Madras School Connect is now accepting applications and for the first time ever, Class IX students are invited in too. Here is everything a parent, student, or school needs to know before the door closes on 30th September.
There is a particular kind of regret that doesn't announce itself until years later. It shows up in a college canteen, in a first job that feels like a costume that doesn't fit, in a quiet "I wish someone had told me this existed when I was fifteen." Most career mistakes in India aren't made at 22. They're made at 15 and 16 — in the rushed, high-pressure weeks after Class 10, when a stream gets chosen not because a child understands it, but because a neighbour's son picked it, or because "that's where the marks are."
IIT Madras has spent the last few years quietly trying to close that gap. Its School Connect program exists for exactly one reason: to let a school student stand inside a discipline — Aerospace, Law, Cybersecurity, Economics — before they're forced to commit to it on a college application form. And this month, that door has opened wider than it ever has before.
What Exactly Is IIT Madras School Connect?
School Connect is a flagship outreach initiative run by IIT Madras' Centre for Outreach and Digital Education (CODE). It gives school students structured, faculty-led exposure to real academic disciplines — the kind most students otherwise only encounter after they've already picked a stream, a degree, and a decade of their working life.
Every course is designed and delivered by faculty from IIT Madras and other leading institutions, and runs as an eight-week online experience combining pre-recorded lectures, live interactive sessions, assignments, and computer-based assessments. Students who complete the requirements receive an official e-certificate from IIT Madras CODE — a credential that sits meaningfully on a school portfolio or college application.
Courses are offered in English and Hindi, with modules in seven additional regional languages currently under development, so that language is not the reason a capable student misses this opportunity.
"School Connect was built to give students an opportunity to explore, experience and understand different fields before making important academic choices."
— Prof. Andrew Thangaraj, Chair, Centre for Outreach and Digital Education, IIT MadrasWhy the October 2026 Cohort Is Different — and Why It Matters More Than Usual
Two changes make this particular cohort worth pausing for.
First: Class IX students can apply for the first time. Until now, School Connect began at Class X. Bringing in Class IX means a student can start exploring disciplines a full year before they even have to think about choosing a stream — while the decision still feels like curiosity, not pressure.
Second: the scale of ambition behind it. Since its launch, School Connect has partnered with over 4,900 schools — more than 60 of them outside India — and reached over 1.75 lakh students. IIT Madras has now set its sights on 25,000 schools across the country. This isn't a pilot anymore. It's becoming infrastructure.
"Early exposure can make a meaningful difference in how students understand their interests and possibilities."
— Prof. Prathap Haridas, Dean Academics, IIT MadrasKey Dates — Write These Down Today
| Milestone | Date |
|---|---|

| Cohort commences | 5 October 2026 |
| Course duration | 8 weeks, fully online |
| Eligible classes | IX, X, XI, XII |

The gap between "applications open" and "applications close" is smaller than most families notice until it's gone. Treat 30th September the way you'd treat a boarding gate closing — not a soft suggestion, a hard line.
17 Disciplines — A Buffet Most Students Never Get Offered
This is the part that tends to surprise parents most: School Connect isn't a single course. It's a spread of 17 future-focused disciplines, taught by faculty who actually work in these fields. A student doesn't have to know what they want yet — they get to find out.
Full course list and syllabi are published on the official School Connect portal — see the reference link at the end of this article.
Who Should Apply — And What Each Age Group Actually Gains
Class IX & X: Discovering before deciding
For a 14 or 15-year-old, this is the single lowest-pressure way to test-drive a dozen possible futures. A student who tries a Cybersecurity or Ecology module now walks into their Class 11 stream decision with actual data about themselves — not a guess dressed up as certainty.
Class XI & XII: Sharpening the direction
For older students, School Connect works differently — it's less about discovery and more about validation, or a useful course-correction before a degree decision gets locked in. Class XII students also get the chance to explore IIT Madras' non-campus BS degree pathways as part of the program — a real look at alternative routes into one of India's most respected institutes.
Students and teachers from top-performing schools are invited to the IIT Madras campus for a felicitation ceremony and direct interaction with faculty — a moment that, for many first-generation aspirants, is the first time IIT stops being an abstraction and becomes a place they've actually stood inside.
How to Apply — For Students, Parents, and Schools
- Check eligibility. Any student currently in Class IX, X, XI, or XII can apply for the October 2026 cohort.
- Visit the official School Connect portal at code.iitm.ac.in/schoolconnect and review the current discipline list and course details.
- If your school isn't yet a School Connect partner, approach your principal or school management directly and request a partnership — many schools join simply because one parent or student asked first.
- Complete the application before 30 September 2026. Courses begin 5 October and run for eight weeks online.
- Stay consistent through the eight weeks. The e-certificate is only issued to students who complete the prescribed requirements — attendance and effort matter.
Why This Matters Beyond the Certificate
At iGrow Success Masters Academy, we sit across the table from students every week who are bright, hardworking, and completely unsure — not because they lack ability, but because no one ever gave them a low-stakes way to meet the fields they might belong to. A certificate from an eight-week course won't decide anyone's life. But the clarity it can unlock — the moment a student realises "I actually loved that Economics module" or "Aerospace isn't for me, and that's useful to know too" — that clarity is worth more than most people budget for.
Opportunities like School Connect don't stay open long, and they don't announce themselves twice. If your child is in Class IX through XII, this is one of those rare windows where a single form, filled out this week, could quietly reroute the next ten years.
