What is AIIMS? Overview & National Importance
The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) represents the pinnacle of medical education in India. Established as Institutes of National Importance by the Government of India, these centrally-funded, autonomous institutions offer MBBS, MD, MS, DM, and MCh programmes, as well as allied health science courses — all at a fraction of the cost charged by private medical colleges.
Unlike state government colleges that follow a 15% All India Quota system, every single seat across all AIIMS campuses falls under the 100% All India Quota — meaning there is no state domicile reservation. Every student from every state competes on an equal footing based purely on their NEET UG rank.
AIIMS no longer conducts a separate entrance exam. Since 2020, admission to all AIIMS MBBS programmes is exclusively through NEET UG, followed by centralized counselling conducted by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC).
The AIIMS brand carries immense weight — whether you're aiming for a super-speciality, research career, international fellowship, or government policy role, an AIIMS MBBS opens doors that few other Indian medical degrees can match. This guide gives you the complete, updated 2026 picture of all 23 AIIMS campuses.
Complete List of All 23 AIIMS Colleges in India 2026
The table below covers all 23 AIIMS institutions across India — including their state, city, year of establishment, total MBBS seats, and approximate NEET 2025 General category closing rank (for counselling reference in 2026).
Official website links below are verified as of April 2026. Establishment years follow Wikipedia / Ministry of Health records. MBBS seat counts reflect NMC-approved intake for 2025–26 session (some newer campuses may differ in 2026 counselling). Always cross-check with mcc.nic.in before filling choices.
NEET cutoff ranks shown are approximate General category closing ranks from 2025 counselling. Lower rank number = harder to get in. OBC/SC/ST cutoffs are significantly more relaxed. Verify with official MCC data during 2026 counselling.

AIIMS by Generation — Old vs New Campuses
Understanding the "generation" of an AIIMS campus helps you set realistic expectations about infrastructure, faculty density, research output, and — crucially — your NEET cutoff chances. Older campuses have higher cutoffs; newer ones offer competitive access for mid-range rankers.
The founding AIIMS — globally ranked, world-class infrastructure, highest cutoff in India. India's #1 medical college for 8 consecutive years (NIRF).
Established under the first phase of PMSSY. These six campuses are well-established with strong infrastructure, large hospitals, and 125 seats each. Highly competitive.
Growing campuses with expanding infrastructure. Good options for students with mid-range ranks (AIR 1,000–6,000 General). NIRF-ranked institutions in this group.
These campuses are functional and participate in MCC counselling. Lower cutoffs make them accessible for General category students with AIR 2,000–16,000.
AIIMS Seat Matrix 2026 — Category-Wise Breakdown
All AIIMS seats fall under the 100% All India Quota. The central government reservation policy applies uniformly across every campus — there is no state domicile preference and no management or NRI quota (except 7 foreign quota seats at AIIMS New Delhi).
| Category | Reservation % | Seats (out of 100) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| General (UR) | 40.5% | ~40–41 seats | Open merit; highest cutoff ranks required |
| OBC-NCL | 27% | ~27 seats | Valid Central OBC-NCL certificate needed; issued in 2025–26 |
| SC | 15% | ~15 seats | Caste certificate from competent authority |
| ST | 7.5% | ~8 seats | Scheduled Tribe certificate required |
| EWS | 10% | ~10 seats | Annual family income below ₹8 lakh; 2025–26 financial year certificate |
| PwBD (horizontal) | 5% (across all) | 5% of total seats | Persons with Benchmark Disability; horizontal reservation across categories |
OBC-NCL and EWS certificates must be issued for the current financial year (2025–26). Older certificates are typically rejected. Produce documents at the counselling reporting date, not before.
AIIMS Fee Structure 2026 — The Most Affordable MBBS in India
One of the most remarkable aspects of AIIMS is its extraordinarily subsidised fee structure. The Indian government heavily subsidises the academic cost — making an AIIMS MBBS both the highest-quality and one of the most affordable medical degrees in the world.
A private MBBS college in India charges ₹20–₹30 lakh per year on average. AIIMS charges less than ₹10,000 per year for the same (or better) quality of education. Over 5.5 years, you save ₹1 crore or more by securing an AIIMS seat.
Always bring at least ₹15,000–₹20,000 cash or demand draft on college reporting day to cover non-academic essentials like security deposit, mess advance, and hostel activation fees — these are not included in the basic admission fee receipt.
NEET Cutoff Ranks for AIIMS Colleges — 2025 Data (2026 Reference)
The NEET cutoff rank determines which AIIMS campus you can access. The figures below are based on 2025 counselling data and serve as a planning reference for NEET 2026. Actual 2026 cutoffs will depend on exam difficulty, total candidates, and seat availability that year.
Cutoffs show closing ranks — the last rank allotted in the final round of counselling. Opening ranks (first round) are much tighter. Plan your preference list using closing ranks, not opening ranks, for maximum safety.
| AIIMS Campus | Gen. Closing Rank | OBC Closing Rank | SC Closing Rank | Min. NEET Score (Gen.) |

How to Choose Between AIIMS Campuses
Don't just follow prestige — align your choice with your career goals:
Expert Counselling Tips from Success Masters Academy
- Fill ALL AIIMS campuses you'd be willing to attend — don't leave any out
- Order by preference, not by difficulty of getting in
- Use closing ranks (not opening ranks) to assess your safety
- Reserve top slots for your most-wanted campuses, not just easiest
- Don't exit after Round 1 if you want to upgrade
- NEET UG 2026 scorecard (original + 3 photocopies)
- Class 10 & 12 mark sheets and passing certificates
- Category certificate — must be for 2025–26 FY (EWS/OBC-NCL)
- Aadhar card + 2 passport-size photographs
- MCC allotment letter (download and print from portal)
- Target 700+ for AIIMS Delhi (realistic need: 715+)
- 680–700 for older AIIMS (Rishikesh, Jodhpur, Bhopal)
- 650–680 for mid-tier AIIMS (Nagpur, Gorakhpur, Kalyani)
- Below 650 (Gen.): focus on newer AIIMS + government state colleges
- OBC/SC/ST candidates: your cutoffs are 30–50% more relaxed
- Confusing city names for newer campuses (e.g., AIIMS Jammu is in Vijaypur, Samba)
- Not carrying original documents on reporting day
- Exiting counselling after Round 1 without considering upgrades
- Assuming stray vacancy round isn't worth participating in
- Using outdated OBC/EWS certificates from a prior financial year
